EMT/Paramedic/FirefighterWhy do we have paramedics and emts, when the fire department is more qualified in the USA? Ask Steve Farzam.

The above is a question that we have probably all asked before to ourselves as we drove past the scene of an accident. There are a few reasons for this, and let me get a little more in-depth and tell you why we have this.

One of the main reasons is to ensure that every emergency is answered. This is true in cities of all sizes. If a call is made that needs medical attention, people expect support as soon as possible. There is no time waiting for first responders to get to the scene as Steve Farzam explains.

This is something a lot of people fail to forget, that emergencies need first responders. That is one of the main reasons we have both paramedics and fire departments in the US. If a call comes in, and there is no one to respond in time, that falls on the fire department. That is why there has been an increase in private EMT’s in recent years.

The other reason is money. This one is that a lot of people can guess right off the bat. The reason these private companies are able to survive is for one reason, money. Cities are starting to realize that they can save money by outsourcing the needs of the public to private companies.

For an economical standpoint, outsourcing to the private sector is cheaper and more efficient then trying to do it on your own. While this may make some people mad that these companies are profiting, one could claim it is needed.

Let’s be honest, in some smaller cities, the fire department is less then well equipped says Steve Farzam. A lot of the time they are volunteers, and many people do not trust their life with them. That is the reason why more and more cities are switching towards the newer business model of outsourcing to the private sector.

The private sector in a lot of cities is able to provide much better care than the fire department. This is why it makes sense for them to outsource to the private instead of risking the publics life.

Another reason is that some cities are simply too busy. Let’s use LA for instance. This is one of the biggest cities in the US. It does not make sense to only have 1 emergency service provider in the city. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

If LA did not outsoruce, it would be much harder to receive medical help. People would have to wait much longer, which means they could possibly have their injury worsened or even worst, face death.

So, the next time someone says that there is no reason for multiple first responders, you can show them this article says Steve Farzam. It makes sense from an economical standpoint and the standpoint of getting the public the best help they need and deserve.
